IMEI Sells Stolen Mobile Phones At Low Prices

     Arifur Rahman Rabbi:

Police have appealed to the general public not to buy these stolen mobile phones to avoid danger.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested 20 people involved in the sale of stolen mobile phones by changing their IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers. After the IMEI change, they used to sell them at different prices through various means.

Police arrested them from different areas of the capital and outside the capital at different times.

According to the police, they used to change the IMEI number of the phone for two reasons. Firstly, the stolen phones were sold cheaply and secondly, terrorists and criminals used these phones for various illegal activities.

Police say that if these activities are not stopped, it will become a threat to law enforcement authorities in the future. Because it is difficult to find a mobile phone if the IMEI number is changed.

CID Additional DIG Sheikh Mohammad. Rezaul Haider told reporters at a press briefing that the CID arrested 12 members of the gang from different areas of Dhaka on Wednesday on the basis of secret information.

The arrested are Murad Khan (23), Lablu Hasan (20), Al Amin alias Anik (20), Bashir Alam Shuvo (30), Abdul Malek (32), owner of a shop called Mim Telecom, Tamim (20), Shah Alam ( 36), Swapan (34), Jahangir Alam (28), Imam Hasan (22), Arif (34) and Al Amin (20).

275 stolen mobile phones and 9 devices used to change IMEI were recovered from them.

According to the information given by them, Murad and Lablu bought the stolen phones from different places at low prices. They were then given to Anik, Bashir and Malek to change the IMEI to fool the police.

During preliminary interrogation, they told CID that they had bought IMEI conversion devices from two shops, Masood Telecom and Kabir Telecom in Gulistan Underground Market. In addition, the CID has learned the names of a few more people involved in the scam from those arrested. An operation is underway to catch them.

Meanwhile, AKM Hafiz Akhtar, Additional Commissioner, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told a press briefing that a team from the Cyber and Special Crime Unit raided the Lalbagh area of the capital on Tuesday and arrested eight people involved in selling stolen mobile phones.

They are Jewel (32), Masud (25), Dulal (45), Biplob Hossain (38), Selim (30), Shahjahan Mia (35) and Khokon (40).

55 stolen mobile phones were recovered from them.

Criminals carry out various criminal activities through these stolen mobile phones. In addition, ordinary people are often found guilty of buying these phones.
